Zakaria Khabbazeh

Name: Zakaria Khabbazeh

Home Country: Syria

Current position: Masters Student & Freelance Architectural Engineer

Why did you decide to study architectural engineering at Politecnico di Milano after your bachelor degree?

After getting my degree from KFUPM, Saudi Arabia & gaining experience in the Middle east, I wanted to expand my knowledge more in the field of sustainable building strategies and energy efficiency. The program at  POLIMI was among the best programs that serve this goal, with a balanced combination between architecture topics and Engineering courses.
As an Architectural engineer and a researcher, I also wanted to get into contact with Italian architectural engineering studios, to expand my experience and gain deeper insights into the European market.

What challenges did you encounter while studying in a foreign country? What are the main differences of studying in your home country and studying at Politecnico di Milano?

Studying wise, I did not find a major difference, especially because my background was also Architectural engineering . of course, at this masters program, courses are more deep and vertical so more focus and time was needed for each course.
The exams system was different from what I used to, but I was able to adapt to it.

Overall, the environment was very supportive, with people always willing to help.
However, one of the challenges many grads face today is the difficulty of securing a job opportunity. Despite having experience from their countries as well as Italian masters degree, many are hired only as “interns” with lower compensation and freelance (partita iva) contract rather than permanent position with contract.
Overall, the required training after graduation was very helpful and easy to get. Many companies were so helpful and supportive.

Are you satisfied about the knowledge and the skills acquired during the study program?

Absolutely yes.
