Current position: Masters Student in Building and Architectural Engineering

Why did you decide to study architectural engineering at Politecnico di Milano after your bachelor degree?

After completing a five-year Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering in Egypt and gaining two years of professional experience in architecture and BIM, I felt the need to further expand my expertise in Building Engineering. I chose Politecnico di Milano for my Master’s in Building and Architectural Engineering due to its strong reputation in both architecture and engineering disciplines, as well as its high rankings in Europe and worldwide.

What are the main opportunities that this Master Program offered to your personal and professional growth?

This Master’s program has significantly contributed to both my personal and professional growth. Professionally, it has equipped me with advanced technical knowledge in energy modeling and sustainability. The program’s multidisciplinary approach—integrating energy efficiency, structural analysis, building physics, and digital tools for building analysis—has perfectly aligned with my academic and career aspirations. Additionally, studying at PoliMi has provided me with the opportunity to work with leading experts and gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies. For example, I have been utilizing advanced surveying tools such as UAVs and 3D laser scanners, as well as conducting testing in the state-of-the-art BeeP Lab.

On a personal level, the program has allowed me to connect with people from diverse cultures, exchange knowledge and experiences, and gain new perspectives—fostering both personal growth and a broader global outlook.

What challenges did you encounter while studying in a foreign country?

Adapting to a new academic and cultural environment was initially challenging. The language barrier, particularly in daily life, required extra effort. Additionally, adjusting to different teaching methodologies and navigating bureaucratic procedures took time. However, these challenges strengthened my resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, which have been invaluable both academically and professionally.

What are the main differences of studying in your home country and studying at Politecnico di Milano?

One of the key differences is the strong emphasis on research and project-based learning at Politecnico di Milano. The Master’s program encourages independent thinking and the application of theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. Additionally, the availability of advanced tools and software, along with collaborations with industry partners, provides a more practical approach compared to the predominantly theoretical focus of my undergraduate studies in Egypt. The international environment at PoliMi has also enriched my learning experience by exposing me to diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and cross-cultural collaboration.
